2018 Day of Remembrance Events

  • 9 a.m. — 3.2 Mile Run in Remembrance — Virginia Tech Campus
    Run registration
  • 2 p.m. — Inter-Faith Service — War Memorial Chapel
    Seating will begin at 1:30 p.m.
    Please note there will be no late entry permitted to the service.

Monday, April 16, 2018

  • Midnight — Lighting of Ceremonial Candle(UPDATE) Burruss Hall
    The ceremonial candle will be lit by representatives of the student body and the names of the 32 Hokies lost on April 16, 2007, will be read. The Corps of Cadets will stand guard for 32 minutes. The candle will remain lit for 24 hours. 
    Special advisory: Because of weather the midnight memorial candle lighting ceremony will be held in Burruss Auditorium rather than the April 16 Memorial. All are welcome to attend the event. Once the inclement weather passes, the memorial candle will be brought from the Burruss Auditorium stage to the memorial for the remainder of the day until it is extinguished at 11:59 p.m.
  • 9:43 a.m. — Wreath Laying and Moment of Silence — April 16 Memorial
  • 11:27 p.m. — Cadet Guard — April 16 Memorial
    Members of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets will stand guard at the April 16th Memorial for 32 minutes.
  • 11:59 p.m. — Extinguishing of Ceremonial Candle — April 16 Memorial
    Members of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets will stand guard for 32 minutes prior to the 11:59 p.m. extinguishing. The candle will be extinguished, and the light will be carried back into Burruss Hall, representing the commitment to never forget.

Expressions of Remembrance

Library Exhibits

Three exhibits will be available in Newman Library: “In the Third Person: Community Photographs after April 16, 2007,” features photographs from the community and “A Community of Learners, a Legacy of Achievement,” features images of the 32 victims and a selection of books reflecting their disciplines and interest. Both exhibits are in the 2nd floor commons, April 12 - April 17 during library hours. “Remembrance and Recognition,” a Special Collections’ exhibit, includes the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School memory book and is open April 13 (noon - 5), 14 (9 - 5), and 16 & 17 (8 -5).

A small garden space for quiet reflection is outside of Squires Student Center’s Old Dominion Ballroom.

Shenandoah

Help us pay tribute to the lives affected on 4/16/2007 and get the Virginia Tech Memorial Garden ready for summer during a cleanup on Saturday April 7, 2018, as part of The Big Event. We will begin at 9am and wrap up around 12pm for lunch. Gore's will be providing lunch for all who help. Bring your work gloves, gardening tools, and Hokie spirit! Bring the whole family. The garden is located in Sherando Park, Stephens City. Official Virginia Tech Big Event shirts for all participants. Triangle Chapter

Join us for our annual 3.2 for 32 memorial run/walk in honor of fellow Hokies and friends lost in 2007. We'll gather at Big Boss Brewery then head out to the Greenway together for the 3.2 mile run/walk. This event is open to all and we'll have kid-friendly activities available as well. You do not have to run or walk to participate. If you can't run or walk you are still very welcome to join us at Big Boss to spend time with other Hokies. And be sure to wear you orange and maroon. The run/walk is noncompetitive and free to participate. Non-Hokies and friends are welcome to join us. We'll also be collecting optional donations for the food bank at the run.
